Zine

My zine showcases simple characters saying a quote from the movie or story they are from. While coming up with ideas, I kept thinking about using quotes for the text portion of this assignment. Once that was decided, I tried to think of characters that fit under one theme, and eventually decided on using fairy tale villains. While creating each page I tried to keep color in mind. I use a few different color schemes including complementary, analogous, and warm colors. I made the colors chosen very intentional rather than picking at random. An important part of this project is texture. Previously in my art, I hadn’t given much thought to texture, so I thought this would be more difficult than it was. After working on my zine for a while, creating new textures came very easily. To make this artwork I used a mix of gouache, watercolor, and colored pencils. Using different mediums allowed different textures and small details. Overall, I’m happy with the final outcome, but I wish I put more detail into the background.

Self Portrait Linocut

For my self-portrait, I hand drew myself roughly based around a picture I took at a football game. I choose this picture because I liked the little bit of blue in the flower crown. When sketching out my drawing I tried to make myself look very blank, so when the color was added it would have more of a pop. I also didn't want to make a super realistic drawing because I find a more abstract interpretation to be more fun to draw and it allowed me to have more artistic liberties. One thing I think I did well was using positive and negative space successfully. I tried to include good contrasts between the subject and background. If I could change one thing it would be the lack of detail in the facial features. I think if I spent a little more time in the sketching phase of this process the final product would have looked a bit better. Overall, I'm happy with the outcome, I just think I should have spent more time on it.

Geofilter

Instead of a geofilter based around a location, I based it around myself.  I started by choosing things that represent myself. Then, I sketched and inked the drawings, so they would be ready to be digitized.  I had some troubles coloring because not all of the lines were completely closed, but it was a fairly simple fix. I only made one big change from my original plan, at first I was going to include a Ferris wheel instead of the Polaroid camera, but I think the Polaroid represents me more. One thing I like about my finished piece is the color pallet. I tried to use dulled down colors to make the overall piece seem softer. I think I could have chosen better icons to symbolize me, but overall like the finished outcome.

For my etching, I carved a stag. I decided on this image because I wanted to do something with antlers and texture.  My first print I didn't really like because a lot of the lines didn't come out very well, but once I added color it was better. With the color, I was able to add dimension and texture making it much better. The last two prints came out much better since I made the lines deeper. Something I don't like is that one eye is higher than the other. I didn't notice this until I made my prints, so there was no way of fixing it. I like the colors I chose because they matched the reference picture very well. In conclusion, I like the last to prints and the colored version.

Dry Point Etching

Animal Vector Image

I chose this picture of my dog because it was very clear, so I could easily see the shapes. I started by outlining the head and major features on it. I then added details like shading and highlights. I slowly worked my way down, with the neck and body. I really like how this ended up because I think I did a good job with shading and highlights. I wish I added more detail to the body, but other than that I really like how it ended up. I kept accidentally drawing on the picture layer, so I had a lot of problems with that. The final piece is exactly how I wanted it to be, so I'm very happy about the outcome.

Graphic T-Shirt

For my graphic t-shirt, I wanted to make a design I enjoyed and would actually be on a shirt. I also wanted to do a design that I hadn't seen before, so I went with a Polaroid Camera with pictures in the background. I'm fairly happy with the outcome, but I wish the screens were lined up better. The entire process was frustrating because of the excessive cutting I had to do. It was also difficult to make sure everything I had cut would line up correctly. Overall, I'm happy with the outcome but wish I had spent more time on the cutting process.

Poster

I began the design process for my poster by creating a mood board that was pastel themed. I tried to make my poster very relaxed and soft. The presketch ended up being very different than the final because I wanted to make a vector image. While creating this I kept color in mind. I didn't want any color to stand out too much. I wish I darkened the left eye more so it didn't look like it shined. I also wish I spent more time on the flyer because I don't like how it came out. I made the background very simple so the vector image came out. I'm extremely happy with how the poster came out, but I don't like the flyer. Overall, I'm proud of the finished piece, but wish I added a little more detail.
